Interior Design Questions Answered by Allison Havill Todd »
Section: Interior Design
Q:  How much will it cost?
A:  Many variables, including client taste and preferences, and the size of the home and project, impact the cost.  Over the years, we’ve found that a general guideline is to plan on spending $18-20 per square foot or 10 to 20% of the home’s value to fully furnish the space from floor to ceiling. This assumes the house is empty, so when the homeowner has some existing pieces, this range will fall a little lower.  Keep in mind this is just a guideline and can vary widely.  A whole room makeover, can run anywhere from $8,000 to more than $50,000.

Q:  How long will the whole interior decorating process take
A:  This will vary from client to client and home to home.  Most projects average approximately 6 to 12 weeks from the time a design plan is approved until the project is installed.  This does not include any remodeling or renovation work that may involve other contractors.

Q:  My spouse and I don’t always agree. How do you approach that?
A:  Most designers are very accustomed to working with couples who can’t seem to agree on the décor for their home.  Compromise is a good starting point, with each party willing to give a little.  With a little digging, we often find that one area is more important to one person than the other and that allows us to select a primary decision-maker for a particular room.  We may also offer three options on different items and give each party a chance to veto their least favorite choice, leaving us with a selection that is pleasing for both people.  With the proper guidance, there are certainly ways to successfully merge different tastes together.

Q:  I have a whole house to complete, where do I start
A:  Many clients have multiple areas they would like to decorate, and without professional direction, the process can be overwhelming and frustrating.  Our first meeting begins with prioritizing the areas they want to address. Using a master plan approach ensures the end result works seamlessly from room to room. Generally, we recommend completing the areas where you spend the most time first.  People tend to want to complete the “front rooms”, since those are what “everyone sees first”. However, these tend to be the least-used areas, and we always encourage clients to initially concentrate on the parts of the home that they really use. We find clients gain a much greater sense of satisfaction this way.

Q:  How is working with a design firm different than going it alone during remodeling or redecorating?
A:  There are many different models for design firms, but our full-service model offers all the products and expertise that go into stylishly furnishing homes and offices.  We work on a design fee compensation model. As with most designers, our contract assumes we will be providing the products selected for the space. We manage all aspects of each project -- from the initial consultation all the way through to delivery. Our designers and project managers address every detail to ensure we exceed our client’s expectations.
