Q:  It seems that cremation is becoming more popular as time passes, do you think that the traditional funeral will one day not exist. And is the cost of cremation much less than the traditional funeral?
A:  As with most everything in life, there are choices.  For families that have experienced a death, there are really only two choices and they are ground burial or cremation.  More families are choosing cremation and I attribute it to several factors.  Fewer and fewer people live in the same area all their lives and don't have the big family burial plots close by so cremation is a simpler option. Some people just prefer cremation and for some it could be because of costs.  Services involving cremation usually cost less that burial services because you don't have the expenses of the burial itself (cost of the burial space, grave opeing, vault, etc.).  There are many choices concerning a service with cremation and you are only limited by your own imagination.  Some families may choose a direct cremation with no other services, some want a traditional funeral followed by the cremation and some want something between.  Your cost will be for the services you choose.  I don't think we will ever see an end to the traditional services but I do think that more and more people are going to use cremation as an option.

Q:  I have an elderly mother in law who wants to be buried next to her mother who is buried in Roseland Cemetery in East Point and I cannot find any information regarding this cemetery---can you help?
A:  Roseland Cemetery is a free standing cemetery at the coroner of I-85 and Cleveland Avenue, south of Atlanta.  There is nobody in charge of that cemetery and nobody to call concerning a burial there.  The funeral home would be resonsible for getting a grave opened.  I would suggest checking to make sure there is a space for her in the location she is talking about.  The directions to the cemetery are as follows:  take the I-85 split south of downtown Atlanta, the second exit is Cleveland Avenue, go down the ramp, turn right and the cemetery is immediately on your right.

Q:  Is there a fee for Preplanning a funeral? Also should I include the fact in my will that my funeral is preplanned?
A:  There is no funeral home that should ever charge a fee for preplanning.  It would be a good idea to include the information regarding a preplanned funeral in your will, but it is more important that your family, or whoever will be in charge of finalizing the arrangement at the time of need, is aware that you have made the arrangements.  Many times a will is not read or accessed until after the funeral.

Q:

Is there a law requiring the use of a burial vault?

A:  State law does not require the use of an outer burial container; however, they give each cemetery the right to make its own rules.  Almost all perpetual care cemeteries require one and a lot of the church cemeteries do also.  Their rules state that it must be able to support the weight of the earth.

Q:

We just moved to this area from another state where we had pre-paid our funeral arrangements at a funeral home there.  Can this be transferred to a funeral home here?

A:

Most funeral homes will accept a pre-paid arrangement from another funeral home.  I would suggest you make an appointment to discuss this directly with the funeral home of your choice.   Please carry all the information with you for them to look over and I’m sure you’ll have no problem in getting the change made.
